Harriet Hageman: Trump endorses Liz Cheney’s GOP challenger

In a statement Thursday morning, Trump said he supported Harriet Hageman, a lawyer and former Republican National Committee woman, for the GOP nomination in Wyoming’s Isolated Home District.

“I strongly support Wyoming’s Republican House candidate Harriet Hageman, who is running against hawkish and disloyal Republican Liz Cheney,” Trump said. “Harriet is a fourth generation daughter from Wyoming, a very accomplished lawyer, and has the support and respect of a very great American senator, Wyoming’s own Cynthia Lummis.”

Cheney responded to approval on Twitter: “Here is a sound sample for you: bring it.”
Hageman will officially enter a crowded Republican field Thursday afternoon with an announcement speech to Cheyenne, according to a statement from his campaign. His previous electoral experience is a failed bid for the GOP nomination for Wyoming governor in 2018. Hageman also advised Cheney during his short run for the Senate in 2013.

“Like many Wyoming residents, I supported Liz Cheney when she ran for Congress,” Hageman said in her statement Thursday. “But then she betrayed Wyoming, she betrayed this country, and she betrayed me.”

Politico first announced that Trump would likely back Hageman earlier this week.

Several other Republican candidates have already entered the race against Cheney, including State Senator Anthony Bouchard and State Representative Chuck Gray.

Trump has made denying Cheney the Republican nomination a priority for the midterm election. Hageman is his fourth support against a member of Republican “impeachment 10” – the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in the wake of the Jan.6 uprising.
