AEW announced the next steps for each of its recent big signings during the September 8 edition of Dynamite. For the first show after All Out, CM Punk started something with Team Taz, Ruby Soho walked to Dr. Britt Baker, DMD and the women’s title, Bryan Danielson made it clear he wanted to kick Kenny Omega and Adam Cole chose a fight with … Tony Schiavone?
Fresh off the hook with QT Marshall, and with his never-ending problems with MJF, the legendary announcer has a new problem on his hands. Cole doesn’t like him to be friends with his girlfriend. He issued a warning to Schiavone, then bullied him out of the ring while repeatedly calling him a “nerd.”
Sadly, it’s not included in any of the flagship clips they’ve released so far. But believe us, it has happened.
And it worked pretty well. I’ve seen fans who really enjoy the platonic, face / heel friendship between Tony and Britt, worried that the implication that Schiavone was sneaking up on the Doctor would taint him. I understand that, but to me, it’s clearly done to establish Cole as a big old jerk – insecure his partner is spending time with other guys, and even ready to bully a 63-year-old because of it.
Not to mention the fact that Schiavone won’t make any moon hopping like the last talking head that Cole was beefed up with, but there is a history of entertaining things that happen when the Panama City Playboy has a feud with types of announcers.
What there isn’t much of a track record is how AEW deals with filming couples in kayfabe. The Rhodes are the only example I can think of, and Brandi’s pregnancy put her stories on hold before we got to mixed action. It will be interesting to see how Baker reacts when her man intimidates her friend.
