Supporters of Gov. Gavin Newsom at a rally spoke of Larry Elder, the leading Republican candidate in the California recall election.
“He’s awful,” a Newsom supporter told Fox News. “He’s a Trump. A Black Trump, basically. He’s a terrible person.”
Newsom supporters were gathered in San Leandro, where Vice President Kamala Harris joined the governor in rallying to the recall effort.
“Oh my gosh, nothing good to say about this man,” a man told Fox News of Elder, a longtime conservative radio host. “It’s a disappointment as a human being. It’s a shame.”

One woman said: “We don’t need a California Trump.”
Elder is the poll favorite among replacement candidates, although as of September 8, polls show around 54% of voters want to keep Newsom in power. The governor only needs a simple majority to keep his post.
Several Newsom supporters told Fox News that Elder would not respect women’s rights.
“He’s completely out of touch,” said a woman holding a parasol. “He thinks women don’t deserve to be paid the same as their male counterparts.”
Another man holding a “Stop The Republican Recall” sign said: “He does not believe in women’s rights or equal pay.”
Elder has been criticized for writing in 2000 that “women know less than men about politics, economics and current events.” Elder – when recently asked about the article as well as the column itself – pointed to a University of Pennsylvania study which he said found men were better informed on 15 of 25 issues. .
The supporter with the umbrella said Elder would “cancel” all of Newsom’s work.
“And that is having masks in schools and health workers getting vaccinated.”

“We have to keep pushing forward for everything we have fought for,” she continued. “Then vote ‘no’ on the recall.”
The recall effort gathered momentum after Newsom was spotted at an upscale restaurant without a mask. The governor of California had issued strict masking, social distancing and lockdown policies to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, which are a reminder that supporters have criticized them for being too aggressive.
“It would be a big mistake if [Elder] took over as governor. It would set us back for years, “the man holding the sign told Fox News.
