After the trailer for Matrix resurrections, many longtime fans of the franchise have wondered what role Yahya Abdul-Mateen II would play, given its eerily similar appearance to Laurence Fishburneis Morpheus. Fans can now rest (or not, depending on your perspective), as the fellow The star confirmed on Instagram that he is in fact reprising the role of Morpheus for the fourth installment of the franchise.
Mateen posted a photo of himself in a suit on his Instagram, carrying a pair of guns and looking straight into the camera in all his bespectacled glory. Subtitled simply with “MORPHEUS”, it is undeniable that he will play the role of the enigmatic captain of Nebuchadnezzar who released Keanu reeves‘s Neo from the far reaches of the Matrix. And we can’t lie – he looks good doing it.
Mateen joins a number of newcomers to the Matrix franchise, including Jessica henwick, Christina ricci, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, as well as a handful of returning cast including Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss like Trinity. But what does this mean for the universe of The matrix, this younger version of Morpheus? What happened in the franchise’s (albeit confusing) timeline that this version of the Rebel Leader appeared to Neo, as opposed to the original? And what does this mean for Neo and the journey he is about to take? Only time – and a few red pills, perhaps – will tell.
The Matrix Resurrection received the green light in 2019, to be led by Lana wachowski, who co-wrote the screenplay with David Mitchell and Alexandre Haemon. The fourth installment appears to be a direct continuation of the franchise, after the Matrix itself was reset in Matrix revolutions, but given Wachowski’s success in working with Mitchell and Hemon on Sens8 For Netflix, fans can look forward to something that will end the franchise with a much nicer arc than in 2003.
