The last time we saw the Bears play meaningful football, they scored a touchdown in a Wild Card playoff game. A touchdown, in a game, that the Saints were practically begging to give. In terms of leaving a bad taste in your mouth for nearly eight months, the Bears might as well have done the football equivalent of drinking orange juice immediately after brushing your teeth. Not a pleasant feeling if you are unfamiliar with it. Imagine this over most of a calendar year.
Fast forward to the following September, and there’s an air of frustration admitted around Chicago. The most exciting signalman the Bears have ever drafted, Justin Fields, won’t start in Week 1. In fact, no one knows exactly. when he will play. Instead, it’s Andy Dalton, operating on the myth of a constant veteran hand that will somehow prevent the already struggling Bears ship from sinking to the bottom of the ocean.
It’s not an inspiring situation, and it’s not made any easier with a prime-time season opener tilt against a team many see as a verifiable Super Bowl contender in the Rams. Los Angeles are largely bringing back the same team from a year ago that had the best defense in the league under Aaron Donald. And they now have a quarterback capable of playing without Boy Genius Sean McVay radio ideally with Matthew Stafford.
Expectations are high in Los Angeles, and anything less than an opening, outscoring the Bears beat doesn’t seem very likely. Stranger things have happened, but we’ll have to wait to see what happens under the lights. Maybe the red gun has an upheaval in it. May be.
