A few years ago, photos went viral of director Guillermo del Toro and actor Ryan Gosling hanging out together at Disneyland Resort in California. Rumor had it the pair worked to a film based on del Toro’s favorite ride, the Haunted house. Eventually, however, that idea faded and one had to wonder: if Guillermo del Toro and Ryan Gosling couldn’t get a new one Haunted house movie done, who could?

The answer, it seems, is now upon us. Deadline reports which, immediately after Loki Star Owen Wilson joins the film, now Ahsoka Tano herself, Rosario Dawson, joins the last Haunted house film, with previously announced cast members LaKeith Stanfield (Atlanta) and Tiffany Haddish (Girls trip). Justin simien (Dear Whites) directed from a screenplay by Katie Dippold (The heat).

It’s unclear who will play one of these legitimately tall actors, or what angle Dippold and Simien will take with classic Disney attraction. But anyway, filming would start in October – a month spooky enough for what we’re assuming to be a slightly spooky movie.

Opened in 1969 in California before expanding across the world, the Haunted house was one of Walt Disney’s great visions, although he never saw it. Guests take a “Doom Buggy” for a slow ride through a beautifully decorated mansion filled with all manner of ghosts and goblins, with stories to accompany them. Eddie Murphy starred in a 2003 film adaptation of The Ride, but most people, rightly so, try to forget about him. One could imagine this version of Haunted house will have a little more reach and adventure, perhaps by taking a page from Disney’s most recent hit based on a theme park ride, Jungle cruise.

Whatever happens, it feels like actors like Dawson, Wilson, Stanfield and Haddish wouldn’t sign for a film with this level of cultural recognition without feeling confident. That face and the fact that the movie actually takes place makes us a lot more excited about the potential here.
