SpongeBob SquarePants meme is in the new Nickelodeon All Star Brawl

Memes makers rejoice, developers of Nickelodeon Star Brawl added a fun Easter egg hidden in the SpongeBob SquarePants moveset. Thanks to its taunt, you’ll be able to reference a meme anytime you play.

Nickelodeon Star Brawl is an upcoming fighting game released by GameMill, which features a cast of characters from a number of popular network shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Rugrats, and of course, Sponge Bob SquarePants.

The developer released a new gameplay video on Wednesday that describes how combat works. While many of the details were relatively granular, and probably more interesting for competitive players wanting to get a taste of how combat works, there was one funny detail at the end: SpongeBob SquarePants has a taunt, and it’s a reference to a same .

During the taunt, SpongeBob’s body contorts and his eyes and nose grow large. This pose refers to an incredibly popular meme, “Mocking SpongeBob”. This is possibly one of the most well-known SpongeBob memes in the SpongeBob memes library, and it’s used specifically for making fun of people. It took off in 2017, which makes it look old in the same years, but it never went out of style. Often times, people format the text with intercaps to exaggerate the condescending tone of the joke, like in this meme below.

The reference seems appropriate given that the game is yet to be released, but it has already become the subject of many memes. It’s just a wacky game where Patrick Star can take on martial arts masters like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and actually win, if the player is good enough.

And in addition, Nickelodeon shows as Spongebob have become the subject of memes time and time again. And now, being able to mock anyone in a game, anytime, feels like a cute little recognition of that and the fandom to come.

Nickelodeon Star Brawl will be released this fall for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
