BEREA, Ohio – The Browns couldn’t get the upper hand on defense the last time they ventured into Arrowhead, but now they can give the Chiefs a taste of their own medicine: a lethal double dose of speed.
For Kansas City, the speed comes in the form of receivers Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman, two of the NFL’s fastest receivers, both of whom were timed in the 4.2s in the 40s. Hardman had a 4, 22 super-fast in a race against other NFL Speedsters in May to promote a product.
But when the Browns line up against the Chiefs on Sunday at Arrowhead, it will be “back to” you “in the deep threats department.
Odell Beckham Jr. noted in July that he believed he could have made a difference in the January playoff game. In addition to a healthy Beckham, curiously recovered from his ACL tear just 10 months of surgery, the Browns have a world-class Hardman-like speedster in third-round pick Anthony Schwartz of Auburn, who was timed in 4.25.
The forgotten man from training camp with a hamstring injury, Schwartz has caught up enough to give Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo something to worry about.
“He’s a smart guy,” offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said of Schwartz. “I know he’s studying her butt. Rarely makes mistakes. Over the past few weeks he’s been pretty much outside. I feel comfortable putting it on and asking him to contribute to this game.
Schwartz’s hands were the issue, but he improved dramatically. After dropping a few routes on the air on day one of rookie camp, he turned around. This is in part because he spent a lot of time training with Jarvis Landry in Florida and attended Camp Mayfield in Austin, TX.
He also flourished under the tutelage of accomplished receivers coach Chad O’Shea, and caught almost anything thrown at him. He seems ready for action despite his limited reps. He also benefited greatly from his daily practice alongside Beckham. A quick study, he’s won at least a small package of games in this game, and if the Browns follow the Chiefs’ model, they’ll pair him with Beckham.
Even Mayfield felt the need to remind people on Wednesday that Beckham’s speed kills.
“Obviously his catching ability speaks for itself, but I think people forget how fast and able he is to take over defenses,” Mayfield said. “Security must be concerned. Teams will have to defend it and choose their poison because we are a physical mentality, race-oriented team, and that won’t change no matter who we have at the reception. It adds an element to where the teams are going to have to decide. ”
Despite ACL surgery and two other surgeries since 2017, one to his ankle and one to repair his trunk, Beckham can still leave defensive backs in his wake.
“Yes, he certainly still has it,” Van Pelt said. “It’s out of the question. He’s powerful and explosive when he starts to run, and he digs. He can fly. Having that speed back on the court, we’re looking forward to that.”
The Browns have copied other aspects of the Chiefs’ explosive offense, but now they have something that can’t be trained – two guys who can squeeze in behind defense and make huge plays. In the playoff win, Hill caught eight of 10 targets for 110 yards and Hardman was 4 of 4 for 58. The Browns now have cornerback Greg Newsome II and other defensive backs who can call, and two receivers that can fly.
“It definitely helps,” Van Pelt said. “You can’t play these guys short or they can pass you, and that’s always a threat. This is something that we have in our attack, it is also the ability to get past you. It really helps when you have several people who can do it.
The Browns are hoping their double sentence will do the trick.
