Trey Lance won’t be the 49ers’ starting quarterback on Sunday, regardless of his health, as Jimmy Garoppolo was officially named QB1 earlier this week. Lance’s injured finger likely made the decision easier for the 49ers coaching staff, and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel gave the media an update on the QB rookie’s status for Week 1 on Thursday.
“It’s still limited. He looked good, but we’re very reluctant to get ahead of the game because, like I said, you’re on hand, ”McDaniel said of Lance. “You just have to let the week progress and see how it goes. . He looked good to throw the ball today and move around, but what does that mean for Sunday? We still have some practice to do before that. And I hope there won’t be a setback and we’ll go from there. “
Lance injured his index finger on his throwing hand in the 49ers’ last preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Garoppolo would likely have been named a starter anyway, but Lance’s injury forced the 49ers to cut back on his fieldwork in the final days of training camp.
The 49ers showed the potential of a two-quarterback system during the preseason, turning Garoppolo and Lance on and off in the same practice. Lance offers athleticism and an attacking dynamic that Garoppolo just doesn’t have.

Keeping the Lions coaching staff and the collective NFL world in the dark about the 49ers’ offensive game plan is in both Shanahan and McDaniel’s best interests. Even though Lance is healthy enough to enter the field on Sunday, they will likely only show limited flashes of him on the field.
There could be an additional update on Friday, but expect plenty of Garoppolo under center on Sunday as the 49ers look to start 2021 with a victory in Motor City.
