Backstage WWE Reaction to CM Punk, Bryan Danielson & Adam Cole signing with AEW

AEW’s momentum continued this week with a newsworthy AEW Dynamite that drew large numbers for TNT on the heels of Adam Cole and Bryan Danielson making their debut, but WWE leaders would not be not too worried about recent defections.

Ringside News reports that Cole making the jump to AEW isn’t seen as a big deal. A titular member of the creative team is said to have said, “No one here sees this as a big loss. Whether good or bad is the mentality.

It is clear that Cole was never going to be a Main Event star since he had been offered to have him become Keith Lee’s manager on the main roster. Ringside News first broke news of Cole’s creative launch as manager on Wednesday and Dave Meltzer continued on Thursday by reporting that the person Cole allegedly led was Lee.

Regarding CM Punk, it was reported by RSN that “WWE has no interest in CM Punk let alone Phil Brooks as a human being.” Punk hasn’t had a great thing to say about WWE since leaving in 2004, so these comments aren’t nearly as surprising.

For what it’s worth, the belief in WWE is that Vince McMahon doesn’t watch AEW so he’s probably unaware of the buzz the company is generating right now. WWE continues to rake in record profits mostly from its TV deals and shows in Saudi Arabia and there is no indication that it will have any financial problems in the near future.

What may start to raise eyebrows is if AEW continues to attract more fans. This week’s AEW Dynamite beat Raw in the 18-49 key demo. If this continues, it will make things interesting when the networks bid for professional wrestling in the next round of television contract negotiations.
