Blue Jays complete four-game sweep at Yankee Stadium, move within half a game of second-place joker

The hottest team in baseball just did something that hasn’t been done in almost 100 years. On Thursday night, the Toronto Blue Jays completed the four-game sweep against their AL rival East New York Yankees (TOR 6, NYY 4) at Yankee Stadium. The Blue Jays are the first team to sweep a four-game streak at Yankee Stadium without the Yankees holding a single streak lead since 1926.

This is the first time the Yankees have been swept away in a four-game home streak since May 22-25, 2003 overall. The Blue Jays also took the top honors in this series, coincidentally.

Toronto has won eight consecutive games in total to move within a half-game of New York for second place in the wild card. The Yankees have lost six straight games – this is the first time they have lost six straight home games since 2011 – to fall one game behind the Red Sox for first place in the wildcards. Toronto has won nine league games in two weeks.

Thursday’s victory was made possible by Bo Bichette’s main circuit and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s home circuit slamming in the ninth. Guerrero has erased 100 RBIs with his homerun and is only the sixth player in AL / NL history with 40 homers, 100 runs and 100 RBIs at 22 or under, joining Ronald Acuña Jr., Joe DiMaggio, Eddie Mathews, Mel Ott and Alex Rodriguez.

In the four-game series, the Yankees scored eight total runs and had four more hits (one three-run, one two-run, two solo homers). As stated, they never held a single lead in all four games, and the score was tied for just five sleeves. The Yankees are now 2-10 since their 13-game winning streak.

The Blue Jays will look to continue their winning streak against the Orioles this weekend. They will play four games in three days (double header Saturday). The Yankees will hit the “road” to play three games against the equally hotly contested Mets at Citi Field.
