God of War developer Ragnarok, Sony Santa Monica, has showcased a number of character designs, with familiar faces and towering newcomers.
This article covers some of the narrative details of God of War, so take that as a spoiler warning.
In an instagram post following the game’s first official trailer at last night’s PlayStation Showcase, we got a whole gallery of characters. Several characters return from the original game, including Kratos, a slightly more gangly Atreus, Mimir, and the dwarves Brok and Sindri. There is also Freya, although her conception is somewhat different – she looks somewhat disheveled, shaken by grief after the events of God of War.
The gallery also offers a closer look at a handful of new characters. The first is Angrboda, the last of the Jotunn. In Norse mythology, she is the mother of the giant wolf Fenrir and the apocalyptic serpent Jormungandr, but Sony Santa Monica may have found a way around that here. In that same mythology, however, Angrboda is also Loki’s wife, a name you may remember is applied to Atreus in the first game.
Next is Durlin, the scholar-looking dwarf with the little squid on his shoulder. At first glance, the mythology doesn’t seem to match this name exactly, but it could be Dvalinn, who allegedly introduced writing to the dwarves.
Finally, there are two very impressive numbers. Tyr is the Norse God of War, and much of the trailer focuses on Kratos and Atreus locating him, finding that he towers over his southern counterpart. Finally, there’s Thor, who will be voiced by Ryan Hurst, best known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead. So far we’ve only been able to identify Thor by his iconic hammer and lightning combo, but Ragnarok strays far enough from the MCU piece we’ve come to know – this version of Thor boasts of impressive weight, with a towering, matching beard.
While her character isn’t included in the trailer, we’ve also learned of the return of another character. Ratatoskr, the messenger god of rodents, appears as a runic animal in God of War, where he is voiced by Troy Baker. In Ragnarok, Ratatoskr will return, but not Baker – instead, the character will be voiced by SungWon Cho, best known for his roles in Borderlands 3 and his great YouTube channel.
God of War Ragnarok is coming to PS4 and PS5 in 2022.
