Tesla Model S Plaid debuts
Tesla claims the Model S Plaid is the fastest car in the world, and the $ 129,990 sedan can accelerate to 60 mph in under two seconds.
The Tesla Model S Plaid broke the Porsche Taycan Turbo electric car lap record on the German Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit.
Elon Musk posted a time lapse on Twitter Thursday night indicating that the car had covered the circuit for nearly 13 miles in 7:30.90am, beating the Taycan by more than 11 seconds.
Automakers often use the twisty and rough track for development and as a benchmark for performance against their competition. Official data confirming the time was not shared, but Tesla shared an uncut video of the lap on his YouTube channel as evidence.
Musk said the 1,020-horsepower three-engined sedan was not modified at all and came straight from the factory, suggesting it was fitted with the original tires available to customers and not a super sticky set of high performance rubber. The Taycan is rated at just 616bhp, while a Turbo S model that hasn’t run long on the track yet can generate up to 750bhp in short bursts.
The car also featured Tesla’s controversial yoke-style steering wheel, which had an auxiliary racing screen mounted behind it for the attempt.
Interestingly, two cellphones can be seen safely in the charger on the front of the center console despite the high G-forces to which they are subjected.
Tesla’s time is also third on the four-door list on the track, behind only the Jaguar XE Project 8 and the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S, both of which have times set in the 7:23 second range.

Musk said the Model S Plaid will return with custom aerodynamics, brake and tire updates to try even faster time in the future.
