Ubuntu 21.10 still outperforms Windows 10, the latest version of Windows 11

With less than a month away from the official Microsoft Windows 11 release, I was curious to run new benchmarks of the latest version of Windows 11 Insider Preview against Windows 10 21H1 to see what performance looks like. Of course, also to see how Windows 11 performs against Ubuntu 21.10, also slated for release in October.

In the initial Windows 11 benchmarking and last month’s Windows 11 benchmarks, Windows 11 tended to perform the same as Windows 10, or in some cases behind it. It is possible that some of these slowdowns are attributed to additional debugging options in current versions of Windows 11 Insider Preview, but have not been clarified by Microsoft. Either way, with Windows 11 ready for general availability in early October, I decided to take it for another spin against the current Ubuntu 21.10 development snapshot.

Windows 10 21H1 with all stable updates was tested, Windows 11 22000.168 with its last public status last week, and then Ubuntu 21.10 with its daily ISO on September 1 were all compared.

This series of tests all took place on an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X desktop PC with 2 x 8GB DDR4-3600 memory, a 1TB NVMe WD_BLACK SN850 SSD and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card.
