NESQUEHONING, Pa. – It’s a fire for one of Carbon County’s biggest and best-known companies.
Fire truck maker KME is closing its doors for good, Orlando-based Rev Group announced on Friday. The company’s sister site in Roanoke, Va., Is also closing.
In a press release sent earlier Friday, KME said it is “meeting with employees from the Nesquehoning and Roanoke facilities to discuss options and reassignments.”
It wasn’t supposed to be that way when John Kovatch sold the 70-year-old family business to Rev in 2016. At the time, Kovatch said he expected the deal to create hundreds of dollars. ‘jobs.
“We feel a very close connection to the community. This was instrumental in getting KME’s operations to stay here,” Kovatch said.
Instead, there were layoffs almost immediately. In 2019, there were around 500 employees with more layoffs on the horizon.
Authorities hoped this was the last time.
“We both hope this is only a temporary thing and I hope they can recall these people in the future,” said Mayor Samuel Kitchko.
It is not at all temporary, as we now know.
KME will complete its production schedule and the plant will officially close in April 2022.
