Bruce Springsteen performed a poignant rendition of his “I’ll See You In My Dreams” at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
“God bless our deceased brothers and sisters, their families, friends and loved ones,” Springsteen said before the acoustic performance. “It’s ‘I’ll see you in my dreams.'”
Springsteen’s impromptu and unannounced performance followed a moment of silence at 9:03 a.m. EST for victims of the World Trade Center attack.
“I’ll See You in My Dreams” is the closing track for Springsteen’s 2020 album Letter to you. His LP and that of the E Street Band in 2002 The climb were largely inspired by the events of September 11, 2001, with the Grammy-winning title track – about a firefighter climbing one of the Twin Towers after the attack – becoming a post-9/11 anthem.
In 2002, Springsteen wrote about the visit to the terrorist attack site and the sacrifice made by first responders in a first-person account for Rolling stone.
“I took my kids to Ground Zero in July. I had not been there before. We just released on this public viewing platform. What is very moving there are the photographs and the memorials. All smiling faces. Photos of people with their families on a sunny afternoon in the courtyard. People in their uniforms. They are a reminder of the life that has passed away. I found this show to be deeply, deeply moving. Just the sense of sacrifice, ”Springsteen said.
I think one of the things that shocked people was the extent of the sacrifice that was made that day. I think there’s nothing that can prepare people – I mean, no matter what they pay you to be a firefighter or a police officer, they don’t pay you that. And it touches on a central point about how people live their duty, their place in the world, their connection with the people by their side and with complete strangers. If you look at the last twenty years, people might say, “Oh, that’s gone from America”. But if you take a good look, it’s there every day.
