Syracuse-Rutgers are tied without a goal and Garrett Shrader is in the game: live score, updates

The Syracuse football team will face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.

Second quarter

4:55: Pena drops a punt but covers SU 15. It’s a good turn for the Scarlet Knights after the previous series.

Shrader remains in the game for a second round. SU shows off a two-way look with Tucker and Lutz flanking Shrader.

7:28 am: After another kick after a special teams penalty on SU, James Williams gets a friendly throw just in front of the Rutgers bench to get back to the 36-yard line. This is a 15-yard change in field position after the initial punt has been returned to midfield.

McKinley Williams pushes Rutgers back again with his first sack of the season, and Stefon Thompson cleans up another negative yardage. With the dome erupting, the crowd imposes a false start penalty. A nightmarish streak has Rutgers facing a 3rd and 30th on his own 16.

The field has completely shifted to this series.

9:53 am: Garrett Shrader is in the game for the first time today.

Shrader sends a pass to Harris for a first try, but play is called off on an illegal training penalty with Matthew Bergeron lined up in the backfield.

On the 3rd and 10 of SU 12, Shrader was tackled behind the line of scrimmage for a three-and-out.

2:09 p.m .: Rutgers still does enough on offense to move the ball out of the shadows of his goal line. He still hasn’t kicked off an explosive play on the SU defense, but he moves the ball close to midfield, bracing for high percentage third-down conversions.

Quarterback Noah Vedral missed a 3rd and 1st save by Garrett Williams to force another punt into opponents’ territory. Neither team gets ultra-aggressive here in the first half.

Syracuse will take over on its own 12-yard line.

3:00 p.m .: A scenario for Adams comes just below field goal range, leading James Williams to kick in the 4th and 10th against the Rutgers’ 38th. The kick goes out of bounds in the 11th.

First shift

END OF FIRST QUARTER: Syracuse 0, Rutgers 0

3:55: Damien Alford on the field for SU’s third offensive series. The six-foot-six, sophomore rookie played sparingly last week in Ohio.

Syracuse continues to move the ball over to Rutgers, Tucker and Harris doing the most damage. A piece performed by Tucker is wiped off the board by a holding penalty on Luke Benson to stop the momentum.

7:55 am: Rutgers connects the first tries back to back to move the ball on his line of 30 meters. Syracuse defensive lineman McKinley Williams entered the game on a third save to force a punt.

SU will start at their own 25-yard line following a late off-bounds hit on returning man Trebor Pena.

8:06 am: DeVito finds Taj Harris, who is fighting for a first try on the 5-yard line before the ball is put out by Avery Young and recovered by Max Melton. After Rutgers wasted an early scoring chance, the game is under review and is confirmed.

11:36 am: DeVito started the team’s second set with a dart to Harris in the middle to land a first down in Rutgers territory. He then found Tucker on a well-designed screen to conceal a 3rd and 6 to move the ball into the red zone.

Ground play continues to be efficient, with DeVito and Tucker recording positive yards again.

Syracuse called their first timeout with 8:06 left in the first quarter and the ball on the 14-yard line.

13:22: The special teams brilliance that Greg Schiano and Rutgers are known for is manifested in a blocked punt to put Rutgers’ offense inside the red zone.

But the SU defense, just like last week, closed the door near the goal line, keeping Rutgers out of the end zone following an offensive pass interference penalty that canceled a touchdown.

The left hash’s 53-yard field goal never came off the turf. The incumbent bailed out after failing to place the ball, and Garrett Williams finished the job.

3:00 p.m.: Rutgers won the toss and will postpone until the second half. Syracuse will get the ball rolling.

The SU offense falls behind the chains on an intentional slump on DeVito, leading to a punt. The training started with a first try from Sean Tucker.

Pre-match notes

Good afternoon at the Carrier Dome, where Syracuse (1-0) and Rutgers (1-0) will face each other for the first time since their Big East days in the 2012 season.

Linemen Dakota Davis, Kingsley Jonathan and McKinley Williams competed near the front of the pre-game stretch line. All three will be available for today’s game.

A quick change of jersey: Abdul Adams wears No.27.

Freshmen Malcolm Folk and Ja’Vontae Williams will not be dressing for today’s game.

By the start of the pre-game, Davis and Jonathan had gone out with the team dressed in practice clothes, with headphones on. Their playing status may be a factor in a game Dino Babers thinks is decided on the scrimmage line today.

Cornerbacks Garrett Williams and Duce Chestnut are among the players left on the field during the pre-gram routine. They practice one-on-one techniques. The veteran-rookie mentor recalls how Williams, in his first year as a starter last season, often worked with the older and more experienced Ifetu Melifonwu.

The student section is crowded with more than 30 minutes before kick-off. The high turnout is in line with other home forerunners, when freshmen experience the Carrier Dome for the first time.
