The new Netflix movie Kate asset. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, portraying a badass assassin. A neon-soaked cityscape that resembles something from a video game. Plus the Yakuza, Woody Harrelson, and nearly two hours of pretty much non-stop, blood-soaked and blazing action.
I would have happily gone to see a movie like this in theaters in the pre-pandemic era. But I’m more than happy that Netflix allows content like this to be enjoyed safely at home. And Kate is another reminder of the big and ambitious promise the streamer made in January – that he would spend 2021 releasing new star-filled movies at least once a week, all year round. This includes, during the remainder of fall and winter, major titles like the Army of the dead prequel Army of thieves (October 29), Red Notice (November 12), and Do not seek (December 24).

In the meantime, here’s a closer look Kate, which is doing pretty well right now on Rotten Tomatoes with an audience score of 70%. The basic plot: The titular assassin was fatally poisoned during his last job. The poison acts slowly, however, giving Kate 24 hours to find out who ordered her death and take revenge. “Kate is the perfect specimen of a finely tuned assassin at the top of her game,” the Netflix synopsis read.
Until she found out she was poisoned. “A brutally slow execution that gives him less than 24 hours to get revenge on his killers.”
As her body rapidly deteriorates, Kate forms an unlikely bond with the teenage daughter of one of her former victims. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Miku Martineau and Woody Harrelson, and directed by Cédric Nicolas-Troyan, Kate follows the furious pursuit of a burnt assassin from a self-proclaimed last job.

In Netflix’s press material for the film, Kate writer Umair Aleem praises the revenge subgenre. And talks about wanting to tell a story that has distilled this genre to its most primitive and existential form. “Something everyone can connect with,” says Aleem. “Aging, dying, struggling with life lived – all accelerated and condensed into one night.”
The production company behind Kate, by the way, is 87North. Which also has another thrilling film in the works based on a novel released in recent weeks titled High-speed train.
Basically it is a group of assassins who end up together on a high speed train. I’m reading the book now, and this one has cinematic blockbuster potential all over the place. David Leitch, one of the co-founders of 87North, is directing the new film. And his co-founder Kelly McCormick produces. Stars already attached to it include Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock, Brian Tyree Henry and Zazie Beetz, to name a few.
