Hall of Fame member Mick Tingelhoff, a symbol of tenacity and best center in Minnesota Viking history, has passed away, the team announced on Saturday.
He was 81 years old. The cause of death has not been revealed.
Tingelhoff was a native of Nebraska and a University of Nebraska lineman who went undrafted in 1962 and hung on to the Vikings, who he would remain with throughout his 17-season career.
As a rookie, Tingelhoff won the starting position and immediately started a streak: He didn’t miss a game, playing 240 starting each.
From 1964 to 1969, he racked up six consecutive Pro Bowl nods and played in all four of the Vikings’ Super Bowl appearances in the 1970s, before retiring after the 1978 season.
Tingelhoff’s number 53 is one of six numbers the Vikings retired, and it was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015 after being appointed by the Hall of Fame Main Committee.
