Life is Strange: True Colors is out now on PC, and although many players are enjoying it, the latest game in the Life is Strange series is currently being bombarded with reviews on Steam – apparently because of the inclusion of a Tibetan flag. in Haven Springs.
Life is Strange: True Colors was revealed earlier this year with its setting – the seemingly idyllic little mountain town Haven Springs. One of the shops on the city’s main street is called Treasures of Tibet, which player character Alex Chen spends shortly after starting the game. The Tibetan flag flies prominently outside the store, which causes some problems in the game.
Currently, Life is Strange: True Colors is being bombarded on Steam by Chinese-speaking gamers upset over the inclusion of the Tibetan flag – which is the symbol of the Tibetan independence movement and is banned in mainland China. While Steam still marks True Colors as having “very positive” reviews, a significant proportion of the game’s reviews are negative and come from Chinese speakers.
While there’s no news on whether Square Enix or developer Deck Nine will respond to this review, this isn’t the first time Steam users have bombarded a game with apparent Chinese issues. Warframe has received negative reviews about separating China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan into separate countries from the options menu, and the horror game Devotion is still not available on Steam or GOG.
That glitch aside, Life is Strange: True Colors remains an excellent and interesting new entry in the series – and it will actually get a DLC expansion in a few weeks in a prequel story.
