Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on Saturday there was “no specific and credible threat” to the American homeland – as he traveled to New York to mark the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11.
“I am very proud to be here in New York this morning to pay tribute to the lives lost as a result of the September 11 attacks,” Mayorkas said. CNN. “This country, 20 years later, is stronger and safer than ever.”

Mayorkas was again asked about the terrorist threat assessment and previous remarks that there were no specific threats known as the anniversary approached.
“This, indeed, remains true,” he said. “There is no specific credible threat to the homeland right now and what we are doing is staying vigilant every day.”
He described a “tiered” approach to keeping the American people safe through government and state and local partners, and paid tribute to the 250,000 people working for DHS across the country and around the world.

“I think we in the federal government are working more cohesively, more collaboratively than ever before,” he said.

He also said the main threat has shifted from foreign terrorists to domestic extremism.
“We have seen the threat evolve from foreign terrorists seeking entry into the United States to the individual here radicalized to violence by a foreign terrorist ideology, to what we now see as the gravest terrorist threat to our homeland, which is the country violent extremists, ”he said.
