Iowa junior defensive end Joe Evans fires Iowa State senior quarterback Brock Purdy in the third quarter at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames on Saturday, September 11, 2021.
There’s no quarterback controversy at Ames – at least not yet.
That was Matt Campbell’s message on Saturday after replacing four-year-old starting quarterback Brock Purdy with rookie Hunter Dekkers in the fourth quarter of No.9 Iowa State’s 27-17 loss to No.10. ‘Iowa at Jack Trice Stadium.
“I guess Brock will be our guy,” Campbell said when asked if he still expected Purdy to start next week’s game against UNLV. “Did we put Hunter Dekkers on to challenge Brock’s position on our football team?” Absolutely not. What we set Hunter to do is kind of allow Brock to pull himself together and really calm things down and really try to win the football game. Even then in the fourth quarter, we felt like we could continue to stay in the game and maybe we had the opportunity to do so. “
Purdy completed 13 of 27 passes for 138 yards and three interceptions before being taken out of the game. The three interceptions were all frustrating for different reasons, the first occurring on a poorly pitched deep ball in the second quarter, the second bouncing off the hands of Xavier Hutchinsons on a drag road and then the third being the product of an inclined pass. on the line of scrimmage. .
Purdy’s three turnovers ultimately led to 13 points for the Hawkeyes in a game where points were valuable and football possession was crucial.
“I think until I watch the movie it’s really hard. Again, man, did a few of these balls, balls that got knocked over, should have been caught? Was there somewhere in the progression where the ball should have gone otherwise? I think those are all things that I will have a better answer to once I watch the videotape, ”said Campbell. “Really my thought was in the fourth quarter to bring Hunter into the football game, to let Brock come together a little bit and it was certainly great to see Hunter doing some really positive things as well.”
Dekkers performed well in his first Cy-Hawk experience, completing 11 of 16 passes for 114 yards and Iowa State’s first pass touchdown of the season. The West Sioux High School southpaw showed off the tools that have made members of the program rave about his potential since arriving as a member of the Recruiting Class of 2019, including the neatly thrown touchdown pass just out of the reach of an Iowa defenseman to Tarique Milton.
People hoping to see Dekkers in a more permanent role as the Iowa state offense chief will have to wait, however.
There is no quarterback controversy at Ames at the moment.
“We believe in Brock,” Campbell said. “Brock is a tremendous leader in our program. He certainly doesn’t want to have the end result of what happened today. He’s a guy who worked really, really hard. If I know Brock Purdy, he’ll bounce back better than ever.
