Associated Press deletes Nickelback tweet of 9/11: it was “in bad taste”

An Associated Press Twitter account deleted a tweet commemorating the 20th anniversary of a Nickelback album, claiming the tweet was “in bad taste.”

“Tomorrow: 20th anniversary of the release of Nickelback’s album ‘Silver Side Up’ (September 11),” reads Friday’s tweet from AP Planner, an account designed to help journalists plan for upcoming news events.

The next day was, of course, also the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, which left nearly 3,000 dead.

Hours later, AP Planner deleted the tweet and posted an explanation that it was “in bad taste.”

It is not clear if AP Planner received a lot of negative feedback for the tweet. Some of the most liked and shared responses on Twitter were from people making puns on the commercially successful but widely mocked Canadian rock band.

“One of the most important dates in modern history and this is how you remind me of it?” Is that how you remember me? ” read an answer, referring to “This Is How You Remind Me”, one of the singles from “Silver Side Up”.
