In December, the UK’s National Video Game Museum announced its latest project: documenting and archiving the first year of the global pandemic, through the lens of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Nine months later, the exhibition is ready and it’s Magnificent, featuring Animal Crossing-style artwork, player stories, and plenty of images that serve as windows into other people’s play.

The main part of the exhibit – which you can find on the Animal Crossing Diaries website – is stories, and they range from exploring pixel fashion to making in-game games, and even showcasing players representing their own cultural heritage on their desert. he is.

It’s a touching tribute to the game that dominated the early months of the lockdown, becoming a cultural and historical moment in its own right.

The stories are broken down into five themes: keeping a routine, creating your space, representing yourself, sharing creativity, and staying in touch, at least one of which you can probably relate to.

There is also a timeline of events in the game Animal Crossing, an oral history of the game, and the background to its creation – overall a pretty informative exhibit. It’s like going to a real museum, except without a gift shop.
