Two men were killed on Interstate 80 in Berkeley on Sunday morning when they were struck by a car while arguing on the pavement after a crash, officials said.

The two men were said to have driven separate cars, which crashed into I-80, west of University Avenue, at around 1:37 a.m. Unscathed, the men and a female passenger got out of the cars and the two began arguing about a collision on the roadway as their damaged cars blocked two lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol.

During the argument, an oncoming Mini Cooper swerved to avoid the cars but struck the two men, causing fatal injuries, the CHP said. The woman may have been hit by debris and was taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries, officials said.

The two men have not been publicly identified.

“CHP Oakland reminds you if you are in a vehicle accident, safely move your vehicle on the right shoulder or exit the freeway,” the California Highway Patrol said in a statement. “If your vehicle is stuck in the traffic lanes, stay in your vehicle with your seat belt on and dial 9-1-1. Be very careful if you get out of your car, especially if the accident happened on a freeway. We may not think logically, which could put you in danger.

The driver of the Mini Cooper remained at the crash site and cooperated with the police, the CHP said. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the crash, officials said.
