Joe Burrow’s return from last season’s horrific ACL injury couldn’t have been better. The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback led his team to a spectacular overtime victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1, and on Monday he revealed he was the one who called the key overtime play that took helped set up the Bengals’ winning goal.
While discussing Sunday’s game on the Dan Patrick Show, Burrow detailed the assist he threw at CJ Uzomah in 4th and 1st with just 32 seconds left in overtime. It turns out the original game was a race, but after seeing how the Vikings line up, he decided at that point to change it to a passing game.
He zoomed in on Uzomah for a 32-yard catch, and after a five-yard run from Joe Mixon, the Bengals managed to hit a basket for a 27-24 victory.
There is a certain confidence there. In his first game in nine months, Burrow was so sure of his skills and what he saw on the pitch that he changed head coach Zac Taylor’s appeal of play from running to passing. He also had absolute confidence in the skills of his teammates, knowing they would do it for him if he let the ball go.
Burrow’s mic drop moment
Burrow’s confidence extended to his post-game media session. He spoke after wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, whose issues with stray balls in the preseason had raised questions about his performance in the regular season. Chase’s performance on Sunday erased all of those worries. He finished the game with five catches for 101 yards and his very first touchdown in the NFL.
Burrow sat down to the microphone just seconds after Chase stood up and he made the most of the moment.
Perfection.
