After the shocking death of comedian Norm Macdonald on Tuesday, who passed away at the age of 61 after living secretly with cancer for nine years, the late-night hosts have rightfully paid tribute to the comedy legend.

At Tonight’s Show with Jimmy Fallon, Macdonald’s companion Saturday Night Live alum appeared to struggle with emotion when he first spoke about Macdonald’s death, but went on to tell the first joke he ever heard Macdonald tell, a long, rambling approach to dogs. Fallon also spoke about the first time he met Macdonald shortly after being hired at SNL. Fallon bumped into Macdonald having breakfast and introduced himself, enthusiastically telling Macdonald he’s the best. But given that he was sitting with Bob Newhart, Macdonald wouldn’t take Fallon’s compliment.

At The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, after the monologue, Colbert returned from the commercial break and spoke about his short spell working with Macdonald at SNL. Colbert only worked there as a guest writer for a few weeks and said Macdonald invited him to write with him. So Colbert spent all his time there writing for Weekend Update, and he praised Macdonald.

“I wish I had been a comedian good enough to make up a joke about the passing of Norm Macdonald. But the only comedian I know who could get away with a “Norm Macdonald is a dead joke,” is Norm Macdonald, “Colbert said. “And I’m going to miss the fact that there’s no one on the planet anymore who can do that, and the comedy world is poorer today.”

But Colbert had a joke he thought Macdonald would have enjoyed.

“So, I hope that somewhere up there, or anywhere …” said Colbert, letting the silence end as the audience laughed. “He would understand this joke.”

Finally, on Late night with Seth Meyers, Meyers, who led the office of weekend updates at SNL like Fallon and Macdonald before him, recounted what he called his all-time favorite joke on the weekend update, claiming it was a “perfect standard joke.”

“The richest girl in the world, billionaire Athina Onassis celebrated her 10th birthday this week,” Meyers said with Macdonald-style cadence. “How does it feel to be the richest girl in the world?” Well, to give you an idea, at the party they had two cakes.
