Chinese electric vehicle maker XPeng Motors officially launched its new P5 sedan in China, ahead of deliveries in October. XPeng’s P5 will hit the European market eventually
In a discussion with XPeng executives following today’s announcement, we were told that XPeng is already planning to bring the P5 sedan to Europe.
XPeng said it will need to fine-tune the new P5 to make it suitable for the international market, although the automaker already has experience doing so with its P7, currently making its overseas trip to Norway. This decision will require P5 testing in Europe to comply with market regulations.
XPeng said it will also need to make sure that features like voice control and the operating system can handle different languages. The same features will not appear on the P5 in Europe either, as the markets have different preferences. For example, XPeng told us that streaming content will be different and voice control functionality will change.
Autonomous driving technologies will also take longer, as the automaker must establish maps, local rules and the tests required to ensure safe execution.
XPeng said European customers can expect autonomous features to come slightly behind the vehicle itself. We don’t have a timeline yet for when the P5 could arrive overseas.
At the same time, the automaker said it currently has no plans to enter the US market.
The P5 is now available to order in China and will begin shipping to customers in late October.
