For the first time in 17 years, Rolling Stone has updated their iconic list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
According to the list’s intro, more than 250 “artists, writers and industry figures” have been recruited to participate in a survey of nearly 4,000 songs to again determine which are the top 500. The original list was established in 2004 and the industry has gone through many changes since then.
Notably, the list contains more hip-hop, modern country, indie rock, Latin pop, reggae and R&B than the previous version, and 245 entries were previously empty.
The coveted first place goes to Aretha Franklin for her version of “Respect”, originally recorded by Otis Redding. The song has seen a surge in popularity recently following the recently released Queen of Soul biopic of the same name.

Second place on the list goes to “Fight the Power” by Public Enemy.

The updated list still places classic artists like The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and Fleetwood Mac in its top ranks, but the top 50 now features entries from more recent acts like Kendrick Lamar, Lorde and Robyn – all of whom have made their mark. high points for songs released after the original was released.
Other more recent artists honored by the new roster include pop sensation Lizzo, Lil Nas X, The Weeknd, Lady Gaga and more.

In fact, the top five is noticeably different this time around, as the 2004 version placed “Like a Rolling Stone” in slot # 1 while “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” of the Rolling Stones “( No. 2), “Imagine” by John Lennon (No. 3), “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye (No. 4) and “Respect” by Franklin (No. 5) completed the top five.
