Need more PS5 storage? Here’s how to choose the right M.2 SSD

Sony Playstation 5 homeowners who run out of storage now have another storage option. In addition fair adding an external drive (for PS4 games), there is now a beta program that will allow users to expand their PS5 storage using specific M.2 SSDs.

If you’ve delved into the interior of the PS5, you may have noticed an additional drive slot inside. It was previously locked down, but now PSN members who sign up for beta software testing features can try adding an additional internal SSD for more PS5 game storage capacity.

To participate in the PS5 beta program, you must meet these qualifications, according to Sony:

  • You must be 18 years of age or older.
  • You must be located in one of these countries: United States, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, France or Germany.
  • You must have a valid and in good standing PSN account with a current email address.

Sony has listed specific guidelines on the types of drives supported by the PS5, but no specific model recommendations. Based on the published specifications, however, the SSD drive options listed below should all work. We are currently testing some of them, including the 4TB Seagate FireCuda 530, which we installed in this handy feature.

Samsung

This 1TB Samsung 980 Pro drive needs a separate heat sink, but it’s currently on sale at a great price for a fast 1TB drive.

Seagate

Ready to use and available in 1, 2 and 4 terabyte sizes. Note that due to its popularity this particular Seagate FireCuda drive has often been out of stock, so there may not be a purchase link below.

Gigabyte

Available in 1TB and 2TB SSD capacities, the Gigabyte will immediately work in your PS5.

Amazon

You can get the WD Black in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB. It already has a slim heatsink, so you should be good to go.

Sabrent

For the more tech-savvy, you’ll need to add a discreet heat sink to it. It is available in 1, 2 and 4 TB.

XPG

You will need to replace the heat sink on this SSD with a thinner spacer. It is available in 1 and 2 TB.
