Samsung Display is keeping its promise to increase OLED production. The company has started mass-producing laptop-sized 90Hz OLED panels, which will appear in several upcoming 14-inch laptops from Asus.

“The demand for laptops is steadily increasing as working from home and distance learning become the new normal,” Asus deputy general manager YC Chen said in a statement. “OLED displays can meet the diverse needs of consumers when using laptops for school, virtual meetings, video streaming, games, and more. ”

In a statement, Samsung Display said, “The 90Hz OLED panel provides more options for consumers who want to enjoy high performance content on their laptops. With our innovative OLEDs, we are even more of a pioneer and market leader in display technologies that deliver superior picture quality.

Samsung Display first announced that it would soon start mass-producing OLED panels in January, although it did not specify a list of partners. “OLED panels may better meet the diverse needs of consumers for laptops used for telecommuting, online education, video streaming and gaming,” the company said at the time.

While this is the first official confirmation from Samsung Display that mass production has started, the announcement should come as no surprise to anyone monitoring the laptop market. With a few exceptions, OLED has been featured widely on large, high-end laptops in recent years, but it will soon become much more common in smaller, more affordable laptops, if recent OEM announcements are to be trusted. Over the past month, major manufacturers including Asus and Lenovo have announced a slew of OLED laptops of varying sizes and prices, many with a 90Hz option.

According to Samsung, the new 90Hz panels will appear on an upcoming 14in Zenbook (presumably the Asus Zenbook 14X) and a 14in Vivobook Pro.

The Zenbook 14X, announced by Asus on September 2, will be available with either a 4K OLED HDR display or a 2.8K OLED 90HZ display, with models starting at $ 1,399.99. (That’s a jump from Asus’ newest ultraportable Zenbook OLED, the Zenbook 13, which has an FHD OLED display and starts at $ 799.99.)

Asus has also equipped a number of its product lines with new OLED panels. Its ProArt StudioBook 16 OLED and ProArt StudioBook 16, due in Q4, are among the first 16-inch laptops to include 4K OLED HDR displays. The 14-inch, 15-inch, and 16-inch models in the budget VivoBook line (starting at $ 749.99) were also fitted with OLEDs, as did the dual-screen ZenBook Pro Duo 15 and ultralight ExpertBook. the society. activity area.

Not to be outdone, Lenovo also announced a slew of OLED laptops earlier this month (also using Samsung OLED panels). An IdeaPad Slim 7 Carbon with a 90Hz OLED display will arrive in October, which Lenovo says will be the lightest 14-inch OLED laptop on the market at just 2.37 pounds. (It will be a QHD + OLED screen, with a lower resolution than the 4K panel of the Zenbook 14X). Also expected in October is the 13.3-inch Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5, a Chrome OS OLED tablet with a removable keyboard case. Starting at just $ 429.99, this will likely be one of the most affordable laptops ever to feature OLED technology.
