The Rivians come off the assembly line.
The electric vehicle startup on Tuesday began building its first production pickups at its Normal, Illinois plant.
“After months of building pre-production vehicles, this morning our first customer vehicle rolled off our production line at Normal! The collective efforts of our team made this moment possible,” Rivian CEO tweeted, RJ Scaringe, with photos of the factory.
“I can’t wait to put them in the hands of our customers! “
Rivian follows a direct selling model and does not yet operate physical stores. Customers are expected to start receiving their vehicles before the end of September, making Rivian the first automaker to market a mass-produced electric pickup, ahead of the GMC Hummer EV which is expected to go on sale later this year.
Last week, the midsize $ 73,000 R1T Launch Edition received an official EPA rating of 314 miles per charge and will be followed by a cheaper model starting at $ 67,500. An SUV based on the same all-wheel-drive platform called the R1S is expected to be produced this fall. It has also ordered at least 100,000 electric delivery vans from Amazon, which has a stake in the company.

Rivian, who first disclosed the R1T in late 2018, has filed documents for an initial public offering that sources say will be valued at $ 70-80 billion.
