As for Paul Azinger, Brooks Koepka doesn’t need to be at Whistling Straits next week with the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
If he doesn’t like the event, the former team captain and current Golf Channel analyst said on Wednesday that Koepka should give up his place.
“I’m not sure he likes the Ryder Cup that much, if he doesn’t like it he should give up his place and bring in people who love him,” Azinger said on Wednesday, via Bob Harig of ‘ESPN. “Not everyone accepts it. But if you don’t like him and you’re not exhausted, then I think Brooks – especially being injured – should be wondering if he really wants to be there.
“And if you add the Bryson [DeChambeau] dynamic at that, it would be an even easier decision for him. “
Koepka doesn’t seem to like the Ryder Cup
Koepka, in one, doesn’t seem to like playing the Ryder Cup at all.
“It’s a little strange, if I’m being honest,” he said. “I don’t mean it’s a bad week. We’re so individualized, and everyone has their routine and a different way of doing things, and now it’s okay, we’ve got to have a meeting then or god do this or go do that. This is the opposite of what happens during an important week. If I break an important week, it’s so cold.
The hectic nature of a Ryder Cup, coupled with the team aspect, just isn’t something he likes. He said he could never go to the gym, take a nap, or relax, which made the game much more difficult for him.
“It’s difficult,” Koepka said. “There are times when I say to myself, I won my game. I did my job. What do you want from me? I know how to take responsibility for the blows I hit every week. Now someone else has hit a bad shot and left me in a bad position, and I know this hole is a waste. It’s new, and you have to change the way you look at it. You switch from an individual sport all the time to a team sport one week a year. It’s so far from my usual routine.
The eight-time PGA Tour winner was the only player not to attend a training session this week at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, ahead of the event which kicks off on September 24. Koepka withdrew from the Tour Championship earlier this month. , too, due to a wrist injury.
Yet despite his feelings for the event and his injury, Koepka said he would be ready to go.
“I feel good,” he said. “I did my rehabilitation, I did everything I had to do to be ready for the Cup. I’ll be there ready to play.
