Protests in El Salvador: Bitcoin ATM torched, protesters denounce Bukele’s movements

Anti-government protesters in El Salvador took to the streets on Wednesday, marking the country’s bicentennial, to protest against the adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender and against recent measures taken by President Nayib Bukele to consolidate power.

Several thousand people marched to the central plaza of the nation’s capital, San Salvador, holding up signs declaring “no to dictatorship” and “we have been swindled by Bitcoin”. The protests have been largely peaceful although a group smashed windows and torched a Bitcoin ATM kiosk set up last month before the cryptocurrency rolled out as legal tender.
