USC head coach sacked on Monday Helton clay quickly threw several names into the mix as a possible replacement trainer for Trojans. One of those names is the Penn State Head Coach James franklin, who has chosen not to confirm or deny any interest in the USC position at this time. Meeting with the media Wednesday night, Franklin explained why he chose this path.
“I’ve found and followed this over time, that really, no matter what you say, people aren’t happy,” Franklin said. “So I decided to manage this internally and talk to our team. It happens every year. I don’t worry about distractions in the media and with the fans, I worry about my team. I’ve talked to my staff about it, I’ve talked to my players, to the board in detail, but I think it’s the best approach.
Wednesday morning, the Penn State quarterback Sean clifford spoke about her head coach’s chatter related to this job. Clifford has made it clear that as a team, Penn State has no fear of losing Franklin to the Trojans. But Franklin isn’t just for his current players.
After explaining his thought process to the media, a member of the media melee asked Franklin what he was telling his recruits. Franklin has said he will keep potential future Penn State players fully informed of his position.
“We’re also going to sort it out with the rookies,” Franklin said. “My conversations with the rookies and my conversations with my team, we’ll have them. And I will know that you will call everyone and ask what I said. I will have conversations with them. But again, having media conversations and having conversations with anyone else, I’m concerned about my team and my future team (at Penn State).
It’s easy to see why USC might be interested in removing Franklin from State College. After inheriting a seven-game winning streak in 2014, Franklin allowed Penn State to win 11 games in one season and play for the Rose Bowl in just his third year. In his full seven years and two games this year with the Nittany Lions, Franklin is 62-28, 3-3 in bowl games, including a Fiesta Bowl victory and a Rose Bowl appearance.
