According to Dr Eric Topol, founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, more Americans will need a third booster of the Covid vaccine as immunity wanes.
“Eventually, a lot more people are going to need these third shots. It was always part of the plan from the start,” Topol said on Friday’s episode of “Mad Money”.
A Food and Drug Administration advisory committee on Friday rejected a proposal to distribute boosts of Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine to the general public. The panel, however, recommended the third shot to people 65 and older and other vulnerable Americans.
Further research should provide better information on the effectiveness of booster vaccine injections, according to Topol.
“We’re going to get more data from Israel, the UK and other places,” Topol said.
The Biden administration has said it wants to start offering the third Covid vaccine to the general public as early as next week, as long as U.S. health regulators allow the recall. The FDA cleared booster shots of the Covid vaccine in August for people with weakened immune systems.
“We have to have the hard truth. What this shows is that we have more symptomatic infections from about four to five months old. [after vaccination]. This will eventually affect all vaccines, as it was never really meant to be a two-part story. It was going to be three hits, ”Topol said.
