Galaxy Fold style pixel, “Jumbojack”, spotted in Android 12.1

For over a year now, we’ve been watching the development of its first foldable Pixel phone, named “Passport”. Thanks to details of the upcoming Android 12.1, we’ve learned that Google has another foldable Pixel in the works, named “Jumbojack”.

Last year, we uncovered the first real evidence that Google had a foldable device in the works. In development under the code name “Passport”, this device was, at least at that time, to be released in “Q4 2021”. Since then, details about the device have become more concrete, with sweets about this foldable appearing even in Android 12 Beta versions.

According to a source familiar with Android development, the next mid-cycle release that we tentatively call “Android 12.1” includes details on a second foldable Pixel. This second device is codenamed “Jumbojack”. We were able to corroborate the existence of Jumbojack in the documentation previously consulted by 9to5Google.

There are several instances of Jumbojack used as a test device because at the time it was, and perhaps still is, the only foldable running Android 12. For example, Google used it to test the device. ‘added “posture” to Android APIs. , the posture being hinge positions like “open”, “closed”, “half open” and “inverted”. A plausible explanation is that Jumbojack is simply an internal testing device, however, Google also explicitly calls it a “Pixel”.

Jumbojack will apparently feature two screens as well, and when that Pixel is folded, the second screen becomes unavailable. This suggests a design in the style of the Galaxy Fold, with a large interior display and a smaller exterior.

An interesting aspect of Jumbojack is that it apparently includes some tweaks to Android 12 that won’t be introduced in other foldable mods until Android 12.1. Specifically, this foldable second Pixel handles split screen in a new way, probably similar to the job Samsung has done for its foldables. Although the inclusion of these features before Android 12.1 might talk about that foldable Pixel coming ahead before this mid-cycle release, we haven’t seen any signs of Jumbojack appearing in regular Pixel apps yet.

As for the codename “Jumbojack” itself, it seems to be a reference to the Jumbo Jack cheeseburger from Jack in the Box. It’s not clear if these cheeseburger origins are any clue to its design, folding the “hamburger style” like the Galaxy Z Flip instead of the “hotdog style” like the Galaxy Z Fold.

As of yet, we don’t have any other clues about this particular foldable Pixel, such as the chip used or the size of the screens. Likewise, we don’t know how Jumbojack relates to the other foldable Pixel, Passport, if the two devices would come out side-by-side or apart a year apart, or if both would come out at all. We will continue to monitor further evidence of Jumbojack over the coming months.
