Machado screamed and cursed Tatis, telling him “it’s not about you” and “you’re going to play baseball” after Tatis punched while looking into the fifth. Tatis reacted angrily to home plate referee Phil Cuzzi’s call, and manager Jayce Tingler was thrown out when he came out of the dugout to argue.
“It’s not viewed negatively,” Tingler said. “We’re a family. We’re not going to discuss the details, but we care. There is passion. There is frustration. These are all emotions that are natural, and these things happen.”
Tatis slammed his helmet into the dugout after the strikeout before Machado started giving him a sip. Machado, 29, and Tatis, 22, were separated by teammates in the incident, which occurred in the bottom of the fifth. They finally reached their positions – Machado in third, Tatis in shorts.
San Diego lost a two-point lead in the eighth inning and lost 3-2 to drop 2½ games behind the Cardinals for the NL’s second and final wild card.
