Marvel and Capcom set to bring back Marvel vs. Capcom 2? It’s probably not a question you’d expect to read in 2021, but it’s a relevant question following some comments from Mike Mika, the studio head of Digital Eclipse, a team that worked on Marvel vs. Capcom 2 as a porting studio and a team that these days have worked with Disney and Capcom on remasters such as Classic Disney Games: Aladdin and the Lion King, STreet Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, Mega Man Heritage Collection, and The Disney Afternoon Collection. In other words, a team with a working relationship with both Capcom and Disney, and a willingness to remaster Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
As you may know, the “# FREEMVC2” campaign earlier this year garnered a lot of attention and support. So far, nothing has come out of this campaign, but that could change. In a recent interview, Mika revealed that the campaign caught the attention of Digital Eclipse and, according to the sounds, Disney and Capcom as well.
To that end, Mika seems to be suggesting that Capcom and Disney’s Marvel arm have been in communication over what to do with the game, and from sounds from it, Digital Eclipse was also involved in this gossip. . That said, for now, looks like that’s all there has been so far: communication.
During the same interview, Mika also points out any obstacles on the way to the fighting game classic’s return, including the licenses involved and the amount of resources it would take to bring the game up to date. In fact, Mika suggests that the cost of remastering the game could exceed the cost of its original development.
At the time of publication, neither Capcom, Marvel, nor Marvel’s parent company, Disney, have commented on any of this. If that changes, we’ll be sure to update the story accordingly. In the meantime, feel free to access the comments section with your thoughts or, alternatively, contact me on Twitter. @Tyler_Fischer_ and keep me posted there. Should Marvel vs. Capcom 2 get the remaster treatment?
