This story is part of Apple event, our comprehensive coverage of the latest Apple news.
The next version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 15, will arrive on Monday. (This is how you are download and install iOS 15 when it appears.) Apple revealed the date for a launch event earlier this week, in which the tech giant also unveiled the iPhone 13, new iPad and the Apple Watch Series 7.
While the new software for iPhones (and iPadOS for iPads) is full of brand new features as the ability to owners of Android FaceTime, put away your driver’s license in your digital wallet and some major upgrades to Apple Maps, you may consider waiting an extra week or two before install iOS 15.
Of course, you can dive headlong into the new operating system and play around with all the new features as they become available. It’s fun, isn’t it? But there are good reasons that might prevent you from clicking the Update button when it appears.
Why iOS 15 won’t be perfect at launch
The beta of any version of iOS is intended to help developers identify and eliminate bugs before the operating system becomes widely available. However, some bugs are likely to creep into the launch version. Just look at last year’s general version of iOS 14, which reset users’ browsers and email apps to default every time they restarted their devices, among other faults.
Similar bugs and issues appeared in the beta versions of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, and could still be an issue in the initial general release. And even if these issues don’t completely prevent you from using your iPhone or iPad, the bugs will still be annoying and disruptive.
Based on our experiences of testing the beta version of iOS 15, the third version was worse than the ones before it. Apps were constantly crashing for no reason and the keyboard would randomly stop working on the iPad Pro. Again, Apple’s development team has probably detected and fixed most of these bugs. But if you download on Day 1, you set yourself up to be the live version of a beta tester.
How long do I have to wait before I download iOS 15?
Going back to the iOS 14 example, the issue with the default apps was fixed a week later. This is the window you should be looking for: wait a week, maybe two if you want to be extra careful, then download the new iOS. At this point, most of the early bugs in the overall operating system and individual applications should be resolved.
Don’t wait too long, however
While some caution can help you avoid headaches, you also shouldn’t be overly careful. Delaying updates to your operating system for too long can also leave you vulnerable to security breaches. Any updates to the operating system related to security issues, such as IOS 14.8 update released earlier this week – are important to install as soon as possible to ensure the safety of your device.
The launch of a new operating system like iOS 15 rarely falls into this category, but it’s an important distinction to make. Whenever you decide to update to iOS 15, first make sure your device is ready. It is difficult to revert to the previous operating system, but it is possible.
