Game after game and pitch after pitch, Washington football quarterback Taylor Heinicke continues to certify why he’s potentially the quarterback of the future in Washington.
The 29-yard touchdown pass to running back JD McKissic against the Carolina Panthers last season relieved quarterback Dwayne Haskins. The silver-right touchdown to former Washington wide receiver Steven Sims Jr. and a diving touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card. He led his team to victory over the New York Giants last Thursday. At every turn, the former Old Dominion star has proven he just might be the answer to quarterback in Washington.
“Even as a substitute, I prepared myself every week like I was the starter,” said Heinicke. “So if these guys in the locker room and the facility believe in me, that’s all that matters.”
For most of Heinicke’s NFL career, he was a substitute or on the practice squad. He was even on the verge of quitting football before Washington called him in to be his emergency “COVID” quarterback in 2020. Save or not, Heinicke is gaining the trust of his teammates.
“He’s always ready for his moment and I like guys who are always ready for their moment… always ready,” said wide receiver Terry McLaurin. “We are lucky to have Taylor and I know he will continue to grow and help us move forward.”

What’s different between Washington quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and Kyle Allen compared to Heinicke is that he’s able to move the attack and extend the game consistently. Whether he’s calm in the pocket throwing back-to-back first tries or jostling himself outside the hash marks to find McLaurin, the man makes plays and gives you a chance to win.
“That’s exactly how he played; he was very brave,” Rivera said of Heinicke’s performance against the Giants. “But when given the opportunity, he stepped up even further.”
So many people in Washington continue to wonder when will Washington get their next “franchise” quarterback. He’s already here and his name is Taylor Heinicke.
