A Genshin Impact player appears to be trying to sue miHoYo over changes to the game’s new 5-star character, the Raiden Shogun.
Like many gacha games, Genshin Impact places a strong emphasis on encouraging players to bond emotionally with its many playable characters. However, this may have backfired, as one Genshin Impact player is now threatening to sue developers for changes made to a specific playable character.
The new region of Inazuma is full of secrets and has introduced a variety of new characters to the game to take full advantage of the new additions. One of those new characters is the Raiden Shogun, the Electro Archon, and the current ruler of Inazuma, who has been billed as a new 5-star.
During miHoYo’s beta testing, the Raiden Shogun had surprisingly good synergy with Beidou, another Electro character who was given away for free during a limited event. In Genshin Impact, the composition of the team is very important and many characters with the same elemental abilities will improve each other. Fans expected this combination to carry over into the full game – so much so, in fact, that some reportedly spent real money playing to draw the Raiden Shogun. Unfortunately, when she was properly released, it soon became clear that Raiden Shogun is one of the few characters who cannot work with Beidou’s ability at all. A Chinese player seems so upset by the changes that he threatened to sue miHoYo over it.
On September 1, a player uploaded an image of his law license to the official miHoYo forums while discussing his grievances regarding the situation with Beidou and the Raiden Shogun, which would affect the ideal construction of the Raiden Shogun in the game. Five days later, what may or may not be a different user threatened to sue miHoYo for separate forum fraud outright. This second article was eventually changed to include a Chinese court portal, but all articles refer to Beidou and Raiden Shogun by name.
In the legal license photo, there appears to be a piece of paper with a name that matches that of the forum poster, and in the second forum post, the confirmation page photo appears to provide a case number and a phone number that connects to the Case Classification Division and Prosecution Center of the Xuhui District People’s Court of Shanghai. It would appear that the confirmation page says the court will respond to their filing within seven days, when a judge makes a decision on the direction of the case from there. If this is correct, it looks like a fan left their feelings Genshin Impact and the Raiden Shogun took them straight to a trial.
Genshin Impact is out now on PC, PS4, and PS5, and is in development for Switch.
