The NFL crackdown on player taunting was criticized on Sunday.
Fans have lambasted officials for throwing penalty flags in games between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys and the Seattle Seahawks and the Tennessee Titans.

In Los Angeles, Justin Herbert thought he had a touchdown pass to Jared Cook to allow his team to score late in the game. But an illegal shift penalty and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Cook canceled the touchdown and resulted in the Chargers hitting a basket to tie the game.
Seahawks cornerback DJ Reed was called up for taunting after appearing to be defending a pass and celebrating a good play. He was sentenced to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Fans were upset by the two calls.

Eliminating taunts has become a priority during the offseason, with the league threatening possible fines and suspensions, depending on the severity of the taunt.
New York Giants co-owner John Mara defended the rule in August, saying it’s “something we discuss every year on the competition committee.”
“We are fed up with the discussions that take place every now and then on the pitch,” said Mara. “We’ve tried to balance sportsmanship by allowing the players to have fun, and there’s always a fine line there, but none of us like to see that. It’s just a matter of knowing if you can have rules that can be enforced and without taking the fun out of the game too, but nobody wants to see a player make fun of another player. I know I definitely don’t.
