The Tennessee Titans picked up an incredible comeback victory in overtime over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, 33-30. Derrick Henry propelled the spectacular victory, as he scored three second-half touchdowns to help the Titans overcome a 15-point deficit. He ran for 182 yards and was once again unstoppable on the ground.
The Seahawks had won 11 straight home opener games, but that loss didn’t go to Russell Wilson. He threw for 343 yards and two touchdowns, while running mate Tyler Lockett caught eight passes for 178 yards and one touchdown. The loss was shocking as the Seahawks were 52-0 as they led by at least 15 points at home. Now they are 52-1.
Tennessee beat Seattle, 21-6, in the last two quarters to take the game into overtime. It was without a doubt one of the best games of the week, so let’s dive into what exactly happened.
Why the Titans won
All greet King Henry. After running for just 58 yards on 17 carries last Sunday, Henry took charge this week with 182 yards and three runs. He’s also been significantly involved in the passing game, as he captured a career-high six assists for 55 yards. He and the Titans had to overcome a lot on Sunday. Left tackle Taylor Lewan was knocked out late in the game with an injury, then left guard Rodger Saffold and center Ben Jones were punched in the middle of the game. Henry was able to make up for it all.
We also have to give Julio Jones a special shout, as he caught six passes for 128 yards on eight targets. He had a crash or two, but really established himself as elite receiver Ryan Tannehill needed while AJ Brown struggled. Jones may or may not have touched a touchdown as well, but we’ll get to that in a moment.
Why the Seahawks lost
The Seahawks seemed to be the better team for the majority of the game, but it really looked like they had taken their foot off the gas pedal. With a 24-9 lead heading into the third quarter, the defense was punched in the mouth as Tannehill led an eight-play, 80-yard run that was capped by the Titans’ first touchdown of the game. It was the first score of what would turn into a 24-6 streak. Even on the Seahawks’ only touchdown in the second half, Jason Myers missed the extra point! One pretty important thing to note, because of course this game went into overtime.
The second half Seahawks weren’t as good as the first half Seahawks – and that goes for both sides of the ball. They left the door open for a return of the Titans and this spirited group took advantage.
Turning
Speaking of the struggling Seahawks in the second half, those struggles continued into overtime. What the hell was Wilson doing on this piece? This could easily have been taken as a security – which would have ended the contest.
There was no real ‘turning point’ as we didn’t find out who would be the winner until this ball went through the uprights. The Titans notably struggled with the kicker position and again tried a brand new player on Sunday at Randy Bullock. He may have earned a job, having scored 4 of his 5 baskets and his three extra points.
Game play
Another week, another long touch from Lockett. He and Wilson feasted on secondaries to start this new year, and it’s something that new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron will be looking to build on as we progress through the regular season.
This score was especially funny as it looked like Lockett wasn’t going to be able to escape safety to score the touchdown. But the two defenders clashed, which released one of the NFL’s most underrated spreaders.
Controversial TD overthrown
With just over a minute to go to halftime, it looked like the Titans had reduced the Seahawks’ lead with a Jones touchdown. However, it was found that his heel had gone out of bounds. What do you think?
And after
The Titans return to Nashville this week and will host their division rivals in the 0-2 Indianapolis Colts. As for the Seahawks, they hit the road to face the Minnesota Vikings without a win.
