John Oliver yells out Conan O’Brien in a speech

This year marked the end of Conan O’Brien’s nearly 30-year-old late night, and many were hoping the TV Academy would give him a little recognition at this year’s Emmys. One of those sympathizers was the guy who ended up beating him, John Oliver. Last week tonight won both the Outstanding Variety Talk Series and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series Sunday Night, much to Oliver’s chagrin. “Like many of us in this room, I was kind of in favor of Conan,” he said in his acceptance speech, “so it’s bittersweet.” Oliver thanked O’Brien for 30 years of inspiring comedy writers, which roughly excludes his work on The Wilton North Report. Well, you can’t have it all.
