Conan O’Brien caused a stir at the 2021 Emmy Awards.
The late night icon, 58, attended the illustrious awards ceremony on Sunday night honoring the best of the best in television and caught the eyes and the cameras when the President and CEO of the Television Academy , Frank Scherma, entered the scene.
The businessman was about to speak about the television industry as a whole and soon after being introduced Scherma started to laugh upon seeing O’Brien in the audience. Soon after, he burst out laughing, like many others in the room.
Eventually, viewers got a glimpse of what exactly was causing a stir: O’Brien enthusiastically applauding and greeting Scherma from the audience.

“Thanks, Conan,” Scherma said.
The seemingly unscripted moment went viral, and viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the moment.
“I love Conan,” wrote a fan. “Dude trolling the president of the Emmy was awesome #Emmys.”
“Conan is the best part of this show and he didn’t even take the stage”, said another.
A fourth added: “Conan is an American treasure.”
Even actress Wanda Sykes weighed in, writing: “Conan doesn’t give an F tonight!”

Conan made another surprise appearance when Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Special won an award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live). O’Brien jumped on stage and clapped before disappearing. In the virtual press room after winning the award, Colbert joked that he asked O’Brien to join him on stage.
“Conan is the kid who graduated who doesn’t give a single fk,” wrote a spectator next to a screenshot of O’Brien standing on stage.
“OH GOD CONAN IS BACK” tweeted another.
One fan suggested, “#Conan isn’t invited again or he’s just sealed his next hosting gig… #Emmys.”
O’Brien’s show “Conan,” which ended its final season this summer, was up for an Emmy this year for a series of outstanding variety talks. The award ultimately went to “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”.

In his acceptance speech, John Oliver called O’Brien by name.
“Like a lot of us in this room, I was kind of in favor of Conan, so it’s bittersweet,” Oliver admitted. “Thank you very much, Conan, for 30 plays from inspiring comedy writers.” Oliver then encouraged viewers to watch clips of the work of O’Brien and the late Norm Macdonald.
