TAMPA, Fla – A week after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed starting cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting on the injured list, coach Bruce Arians said general manager Jason Licht contacted veteran cornerback Richard Sherman to gauge his interest.

Sherman, 33, would bring valuable experience to one of the league’s youngest defensive backfields, and he’s a sure tackle, which has been a problem for the Bucs defense for two games this year. Sherman does, however, have legal issues that he is still working on. He was arrested in July for an incident at his wife’s parents’ home in Redmond, Washington, which was accompanied by five counts of misdemeanor, including two counts of domestic violence – second degree criminal trespassing and malicious mischief third degree – as well as resistance to arrest, driving under the influence and reckless endangerment of road workers.
Sherman pleaded not guilty to all five counts and said in a Twitter statement that he had “deep remorse” for his actions and “behaved in a way that I am not proud of.”
In February, King County prosecutors and the sheriff also obtained an “extreme risk protection order” for Sherman, prohibiting him from having firearms after a judge determined he was a danger. for himself and for others. Details of the case have been sealed.
The Bucs have not shied away from signing players who have had legal and character issues. They signed wide receiver Antonio Brown last year after his eight-game suspension ended and re-signed him to another one-year contract this offseason.
