San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk might have turned a corner with Kyle Shanahan on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The second-year catcher saw 20 shots in the field, who was second among the team’s receivers behind Deebo Samuel, who was on the pitch for 28 shots. Aiyuk was also targeted in Philadelphia, and the ball was thrown at him twice.
The outing comes just a week after Aiyuk was not targeted once against the Lions, a game in which he was placed behind Trent Sherfield in the offensive pecking order. Shanahan later told reporters that Sherfield “has earned the right to be more present.”
The 49ers coach then clarified that this was not a case of Aiyuk having issues with the team, but rather that Sherfield made a jump to camp and preseason when Aiyuk s ‘was injured in the hamstring. The question then became when, if ever, Aiyuk would regain his place in offense, after a strong rookie season of 60 receptions for 748 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
After a few early throat clearings that sparked more concern among fantasy football owners, Shanahan hinted ahead of the Eagles game that Aiyuk’s return to normal was imminent.
“I want Aiyuk to reclaim this place, but Trent Sherfield isn’t making it easy,” the coach said on Friday. “He played at a high level. It is not personal. … Things are more important because of fantasy football.
The numbers that followed seem to imply that Aiyuk is heading in the right direction – Sherfield got one more target than him, but he saw eight fewer shots.
