We haven’t even finished September, but it’s been a hell of a month for Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings. The superhero movie directed by Simu Liu open above $ 70 million, much stronger than the industry forecast had predicted, and he managed to completely destroy the previous record set for a movie released over the Labor Day weekend (Rob Zombie’s Halloween, which made $ 30 million more than ten years ago). The question, however, was whether or not he could retain that box office power better than Black Widow fact, which had opened simultaneously in theaters and on the premium level of Disney + (the latter quickly becoming favorite place to see it, if the receipts were anything to pass). Shang-Chi, in particular, is not on Disney + – a move that Disney’s Bob Chapek roughly called an “interesting experiment” – and now, after three weeks, it will most likely outperform Black Widow At the end of the month.

Shang-Chi made $ 21 million last weekend, and while that was a drop from last week ($ 34 million), it still took it to a total of $ 176 million at the box- American office. Black Widow, by comparison, is the current box office champion for the year with a total of $ 183 million, which Shang-Chi should have no trouble beating. The other big winner of the year, F9, made $ 172 million and was previously beaten by Shang-Chi.

But there are other films at the box office, though none of them even broke $ 6 million last weekend. free guy came the fences, getting $ 5 million and hitting $ 108 million in total (no complaints, to be fair). Then it’s Clint Eastwood’s crying macho, which grossed $ 4.5 million on its concurrent theatrical / HBO Max debut. Warner Bros. ‘ day and date streaming plan started off strong, with movies like Godzilla vs. Kong and Mortal combat performed well in theaters although it is available to stream at home, but few films other than the really big names have managed to make much of an impact in theaters. Presumably that means people are watching these home movies on HBO Max, which is certainly good for HBO Max, but it can’t be good for Warner Bros. continued viability as a large film studio. This means the studio is probably telling the truth when they say that this “all of our movies will be on HBO Max, day one” stunt won’t happen again.

Elsewhere on the charts, Gerard Butler’s purposely retro action thriller Copshop made a relatively respectable $ 2.3 million in its early days, with limited releases for Tammy Faye’s eyes and The hostel out of nowhere make $ 675,000 and $ 20,000 (respectively).
