Norwich – Norwich will mark International Day of Peace on Tuesday with a brief ceremony at Town Hall at 11:50 a.m. and an evening lecture program on an artist and early 20th century peace activist.
Tuesday’s ceremony will feature an invocation by a representative of the Norwich Clergy Association, a proclamation read by Mayor Peter Nystrom and a ringing of the town’s freedom bell. There will be a minute of silence at noon.
At 7:00 p.m. at Park Congregational Church, 283 Broadway, an illustrated lecture, “Kathe Kollwitz: Artist as Activist”, will be presented by Amanda A. Douberley, Assistant Curator and Academic Liaison at the William Benton Museum of Art, University of the Connecticut. . The German artist lost his son at the start of World War I and this affected his life of art and peace activism.
The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 to promote peace among all the peoples of the world, ”said Norwich City historian Dale Plummer, president of the First World War Memorial from Norwich.
The noon minute of silence will be observed worldwide Tuesday at noon local time in each time zone, Plummer said.
